Maslow's "hierarchy of needs" is a theory in psychology proposed by Abraham Maslow in the 1940's to better understand how humans are motivated to realize their full potential. The ultimate goal being health and happiness.
We are constantly trying to figure out this great big secret to happiness when it is right there in front of us. The foundation of this theory explains a lot to this day-- aka: why people join gangs (helllllllo--- survival and belonging), why depression is at an all time high, why we are addicted to "things" and substances, why we are obsessed with dating apps, the instant gratification of Instagram and Facebook, and why we would rather conform than have a God damn original thought.
Is addiction really a disease in itself? Or rather the result of a diseased society?
Maslow theorizes that our "basic needs" must be fulfilled before we can meet the next set of "needs."
Biological and Physiological needs - air, food, drink, shelter, warmth, sex, sleep.
Safety needs - protection from elements, security, order, law, stability, freedom from fear.
Love and belongingness needs - friendship, intimacy, trust and acceptance, receiving and giving affection and love. Affiliating, being part of a group (family, friends, work).
Esteem needs - achievement, mastery, independence, status, dominance, prestige, self-respect, respect from others.
- Self-Actualization needs - realizing personal potential, self-fulfillment, seeking personal growth and peak experiences.
Most of us manage 1 and 2 to a basic degree. But what happened to 3?
- Are we really a civilization that respects ourselves more based on the number of "likes" a social post gets?
- That trusts so few, we feel obligated to take on the world alone?
- That chooses the wrong friends, just because we want to be a part of something?
Are we really that confused as a culture to think that a new president is going to fix everything?
Uh. Wake up call. It starts with us. We have all been through different shit that makes us feel a bit fucked up. But it is our job not to stay fucked up.
